🎯 Purpose
Developed for Columbia University's annual public exhibition on STEAM subjects, this initiative aims to enhance public understanding and engagement with AI technologies.

Project Overview

With the buzz about Chat-GPT sweeping the internet, the exhibition sought to go beyond knowledge sharing, offering a hands-on, immersive experience for a diverse audience to explore the creative potential of generative AI. I designed an interactive exhibition that guided visitors to apply prompt engineering techniques in engaging with the technology and reflect on their attitudes before and after the experience.

Station 1: Share Initial Feelings and Attitudes

The first station invited visitors to reflect on and share their initial understanding about ChatGPT: How do they feel about the technology? What potential or risks do they see? After the guided activities in the second station, they would reassess these impressions to reflect on what their learnings and changes.

Station 2️: Play and Explore

Facilitated by prompt cheat sheets, visitors engaged in a diverse array of activities with ChatGPT, ranging from role play, simulation, gaming, to open-ended conversations.

Station 3: Reflect & Share the Experience

In the last stage, participants were prompted to reflect on their attitude change before and after the interaction, and share their insights with one another.

Process

1️⃣ Ideation & Design

Our goal was to inspire visitors to move from passive understanding to active creation with generative AI through hands-on experimentation with ChatGPT. This vision shaped the  overarching theme: "Rethinking the Human-AI Relationship: How ChatGPT Fosters New Ways of Thinking and Problem Solving."

Two key principles guided the design:

💡 Active learning: devising cues and activities to promote hands-on experimentation to foster active participation.

💡Social-emotional learning: prompting meaningful reflections and collaborative learning  through comparative attitude assessment and encouraging social sharing.

2️⃣ Content Curation

The exhibition targeted a general public audience from diverse backgrounds and walks of life. To cater for varied learner needs, I curated a range of prompts and activities across different topics and visualized the content in multimedia formats to engage diverse learning styles effectively.

3️⃣ Display and audience guidance

On the day of the exhibition, our station rapidly became a visitor favorite, with the whiteboard brimming with feedback from enthusiastic participants. Reactions ranged from excitement about technology's newfound capabilities to thoughtful contemplation of its potential drawbacks.

Reflection

The exhibition highlighted the power of active and social learning in technology. By sparking curiosity and scaffolding hands-on experimentation, we guided people to form personal, meaningful insights into AI. Such discussions are essential steps toward informed understanding and responsible use, and I’m proud our exhibition contributes to this broader conversation.
